Question - whats more important physical health or mental health?
They are EQUALLY as important as each other - Unfortunately the rest of society (including the workplace *cough cough*) hasn't caught up yet.
If you had flu, or broke a leg, that would be debilitating right, you would probably call in sick and feel justified doing so. Now if you were feeling low, exhausted, anxious, stressed, irritable would you feel as confident to take the day?
Or would you drag yourself in thinking that mental health isn't important enough to keep you away from your job?
Well think about it like this...
When you’re stressed whether at work or your personal life, your body believes it’s under attack and switches to what's known as ‘fight or flight’ mode. As a result, a mix of hormones and chemicals are released into your body so that you prepare for physical action. Blood might also be diverted to muscles, causing you to lose concentration or become less able to digest food.
When the threat passes, your body usually returns to normal, but if you’re continually under pressure (i.e. going back to the same stressful environment) this might not be the case.
Two hard and unfair truths:
-People with serious mental health conditions are at high risk of experiencing chronic physical conditions.
-People with chronic physical conditions are at risk of developing poor mental health
As you can see mental health and physical health are COMPLETELY related. Anyone that struggles with mental health knows how debilitating it can be.
I get it. The pressure of being seen as a good employee is real (trust me I've been there).
But is it worth your health?
My recommendation? - Put your health first - TAKE THE DAY.
