➪ Review❤︎❤︎❤︎ ❀ Happy Saturday Loves!!! I finished Open Water By: Caleb Azumah Nelson ...and please forgive me while I try to sum up my feelings for this book. I’m still NOT OVER IT. Still AT A LOST FOR WORDS at how much I love this book. ——— ❀ QUICK ANNOUNCEMENT: I finally created a BLOG !!! Please click the link in my bio for the full review, and more. I’ve been inspired by so many people (@mindforbooks @whatjamieread @kelseylovesbooks) , and finally decided to take the next step. Bare with me. I’m still working on it from time to time. I mistakenly released it early, and was too afraid to share with y’all, but why?! I’m crazy. Anyway, check it out❤︎❤︎❤︎ ——— ❀ Brief Review: This is Debut Novella that tells the story of two Black British people, one a photographer—the other a dancer. They are trying to make their mark in a world that celebrates and rejects them in the same breath. Throughout the story, we are basically seeing first hand how two people can meet and instantly have a connection. I know there’s a lot of people who don’t believe in love at first sight, and that’s understandable especially how it’s portrayed in the stories we are told. I, myself—am not totally sure how I feel about that. I’m a bit of a realist, but after reading this book—I understand exactly what Caleb’s intentions were from their very first interaction, and let me tell you...it’s such a beautiful ride. Though that was a huge part of the story, this book was so much more than a romance... A little throwback to my past work for black history month, My first major solo portrait project, was exhibited at City Hall in London and opened and launched by the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the collection went to travel the country with much much success. Last year Ipswich Borough Council kindly asked to reproduce some of the images again in the centre of town. The display of 16 large images was held for the whole of October. I photographed Shevelle Dynott, a Raising Ballet dancing star in a rundown south east London housing estate. Shevelle is one of the rising stars of the English National Ballet and was first spotted by the Royal Ballet's 'Chance to Dance' scheme at his primary school in Brixton, South London. Dynott has since performed at the Royal Albert Hall and with the ENB. I was against shooting him in a typical ballet arena backdrop, so I decided to take him back to his south London roots and to use the backdrop of the vast council estates which, at the time, seemed to encapsulate or dominate inner-city south London. Read more at https://www.johnfergusonphoto.com/photojournal/raisingdancestar The 55 people in this exhibition have all succeeded in their chosen professions because of their of ambition and unflinching determination to reach their full potential. Their success should act as an inspiration for all young people. Their perseverance in dealing with the challenges, the stereotypes and the obstacles that have hindered young people, black or white should act as an example to young people every where. When I first entered the media world that was ‘fleet Street’ back in the 1980s, I arrived wide-eyed and excited, my dream was to see my pictures printed in some of the nations well known newspapers & magazines. I still enjoy the buzz and elation each time my work is published today. But this didn’t happen over night, like my fellow black contemporaries I had to deal with the prejudices and the disappointments. I came to a decision that I would never allow the prejudices of that period to deter my efforts and distract me from my goal of becoming a photographer. #photography #photographer #portraitphotography #portraiture #blackbritish

Reposted from @uhuru_mosiah_malcolm Congo Square is an open space, now within Louis Armstrong Park, New Orleans, Louisiana. - During the 18th century and the era of Slavery, enslaved Africans would gather on Sundays to socialise.  - Even though they were not given the right to meet up, the masses would still meet to trade and converse. - Africans of the period would set up market stalls, sing, dance and play music. The trading allowed some to earn a wage which could theoretically be used to buy their freedom. - As Protestant colonies supressed African music and celebrations the gatherings became famous due to their scarcity. - Originally Africans from the Congo brought dances such as the Bamboula, Calinda, Carabine and Juba aswell as music. The rhythms from the music and sounds can still be found in New Orleans jazz especially at funerals. - Other Africans from different colonies such as Haiti would arrive bringing their culture which diversified the collective African social presence. - A witness recorded around 500-600 Africans celebrating and dancing on one occasion, they documented that the dancers were separated in tribal groupings with each nation gathering in their individual collective throughout the square. - The square became a place to practice traditional spiritual ceremonies and was regularly circulated by ‘Voodoo Queen’ Marie Laveau who held dances and conducted ceremonies. - Congo Square was also a place for revolutionary Africans to meet, organise and review plans. - As time passed the music from the square would merge with European influences which would gradually develop into African American culture. - At times laws were passed to prevent them meeting at Congo Square but many surrounding areas were utilized instead. - The square would act as inspiration for the much later New Orleans musical renaissance and as a result there are many musical compositions named after the location. - Today the square is still used for celebrations and is utilized for events such as Martin Luther King Day. #kongo #congo #congosquare #neworleans #voodoo #africansymbols #africanhistory #africanamerican #africanamericanhistory #blackexcellence #blackbritish

@imaydestroyyou is not about rape, assault and abuse. It is, of course, to a great extent, but it is *essentially* about living after it, coping with it, when you’re young, sexually active and full of life. One could say that it’s actually simply about living… . If they were releasing “I May Destroy You” on DVD and I was this big famous critic they would have asked for one word-summary with exclamation mark to put on its cover, I’d have gone with “PHENOMENAL!”.🔥 . Because it is. It is not always tightly written (and occasionally is what they call “all over the place”🙂), the characters' narcissism and mood swings are occasionally too much and that’s why perhaps awards season did not recognize it. But it is indeed phenomenal, impessive and it never lets you go despite all its faults, hitting you hard frequently and exploding unpredictably in the series’ finale and making you remember it forever. Michaela Coel who plays the leading role - and who is also the series’ creator, basing it on her own traumatic experience❗️ - is unforgettable. And it feels very much and often like REAL LIFE, so many WTF moments with "so what were they thinking" viewer-vibe (as the return to Italy, for example) end up looking genuine somehow.🤷‍♂️❤️Don't miss! 🙌 . #imaydestroyyou #michaelacoel . . #tvseries #british #drama #hbomax #kyiv #киев #screencaps #screencapture #tvquotes #seriestv #сериал #сериалы #justwatch #bingewatching #stuffilove #tvaddict #tvshows #seriesquotes #bestof2020 #justwatched #recommended #сериальное #blackbritish #britishactress

This book is eye opening. It really shows how biased the UK education system. Living in Hull you think you know a lot about abolitionism but Wilberforce was a key supporter of gradualism - a slow gradual end to slavery. The amount of money given to slave owners while slaves that were freed were often left to homelessness, poverty, and disease. Anyone who says "we can't have black people in *insert historical film here*, there were no Black people here then" needs to read this book ASAP. Its very clearly written. I have ADHD and struggle a lot with reading, but this is written so well I can read and comprehend it easily Please give this a read, I almost guarantee you will learn something new! #blackandbritish #blackhistorymatters #blackhistoryuk #blm #blmuk #socialreform #adhdawareness #ukhistory #britishhistory #blackbritish #davidolusoga #bookreview #bookstagramcommunity

// Open Water // Caleb Azumah Nelson // Book Review 5✨// • “What you're trying to say is that it's easier for you to hide in your own darkness, than emerge cloaked in your own vulnerability. Not better, but easier. However the longer you hold it in, the more likely you are to suffocate. At some point, you must breathe.” • Two young people meet at a pub in South East London. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists - he a photographer, she a dancer - trying to make their mark in a city that by turns celebrates and rejects them. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence. At once an achingly beautiful love story and a potent insight into race and masculinity, Open Water asks what it means to be a person in a world that sees you only as a Black body, to be vulnerable when you are only respected for strength, to find safety in love, only to lose it. With gorgeous, soulful intensity, Caleb Azumah Nelson has written the most essential debut of recent years. • I read this book about a week ago but honestly I’m struggling to put into words, just how incredible the writing is. Caleb has poured his heart and soul into the prose and it shows. Poetic, full of love and hard hitting, it allows us to glimpse inside a young black man’s life with such honesty and emotion. I won’t pretend I will ever truly understand what that is like, it would be ignorant of me to assume I could. I like to think that with each book I read, I carry with me a small piece of understanding for each character, each teach me a lesson about another’s experience different to my own. The ongoing love story intertwined perfectly through the rhythm and sounds of London life, it had me longing for those lazy, sultry summers full of promise. Time seemed to pass in intimate flashes of memories, with a playlist of songs providing the backdrop to the story. I implore you to pick up this short story, Azumah Nelson’s debut is outstanding. FYI: The Spotify playlist that accompanies this book....gives me all the feels. • ✨✨✨✨✨

Do we ever really stray too far from our younger selves?! • • Do you ever look back at photos of yourself when you were younger & then look at yourself now and just deep the change and also similarities?!... Of course life experiences force us to grow, become wiser & collect some battle scars through this war zone we call Earth BUT the essence of who we are never really changes. It's good to look back, to see how far you've come & it's good to look forward to envision the blessings coming your way. Most importantly, look at right here & right now because your journey so far is worth celebrating and your presence is a gift. 🦋💙

Clive played the national sport of Wales to the highest standard from a young age, and signed a contract with Hull FC aged 17. His international debut came for The Lions came in 1968 and later led Great Britain to World Cup glory in 1972. Six months after retiring from the pitch, Clive passed away aged 42 from a short battle with liver cancer. 🌍 Day 9 of #AfrocentricAprilBookstaTour: Historical Fiction Victoria Princewill’s debut novel, IN THE PALACE OF FLOWERS is a masterpiece in the art of writing unfamiliar people, custom & historical events with both care and diligence. In this novel, #VictoriaPrincewill sought to immortalise a long forgotten historical figure whose very existence demystified the pervasive narrative that the Transatlantic Slave Trade was limited only to Europe & The Americas. Instead, Princewill centres the many roles occupied by East African slaves in 19th century Persian courts. It’s is a stunning debut that deliberately elides the overly exhausted trope of disempowered enslaved people. Instead the primary characters are consumed by the desire to survive & be remembered. Which Princewill has done in posthumously honouring their desires in this unforgettable book. Review: In most palace intrigues, power struggle & quest for survival is almost always focussed on the ruling class, key advisers, and power brokers. In these narratives, voices of the enslaved are either mute, silenced, or erased. In this sprawling narrative of the political machination of ambitious noblemen & political advisers within 19th century Persian Royal courts, Victoria Princewill sought to right many historical wrongs by telling the story through the lens of Jamīla & Abimalech, two Abyssinia slaves caught up in navigating and devising strategies of survival within the Persian royal courts at the height of political unrest in France & Russia amidst a palpable fear of increasing political dissent against the Persian monarchs in Iran. Set in the latter part of the 19th century and inspired by the only existing first-person narrative of an enslaved Abyssinian woman in Iran, IN THE PALACE OF FLOWERS is an utterly engrossing novel about political intrigue, apathy, radical activism, & quest for survival in 19th century Iran. It is an excellent study on the invisible thread that binds world history & the domino effect of each person’s action. A must read. #InThePalaceOfFlowers #ReadCassava #AfricanHistory #HistoricalFiction #BooksAndRhymes #BlackInIran

J is for jealousy. I am mildly ashamed to admit In my younger years I was terrible for it yet didn't realise it. As an artist, an overburned perfectionist geek who sought an unattainable form of perfectionism - I didn't realise how petty I would be. If things didn't go my way I would go mad with comparison. I should be a millionaire as a first generation black British woman, imposed on me by my family. I don't like this word, the stigma that is attached to it as a Christian woman, I would deny it vehemently. Because I was taught and raised to be above everyone else yet why are they happier than me? So I would seek their success and not focus on my own. Now after much reflection I cannot fathom going back to that hateful mindset. But I don't punish myself like I used to either. It would be a vicious cycle of knowing it was wrong yet hating myself for it because I wouldnt accept it. But now I can because who you are is who you choose to be. Not what others see and impose on you. If you have read this far, thank you. This was incredibly difficult to write because admitting faults on the internet can feel like a crime. But the only crime I have done is not being true to myself ✌🏾🌙 . . . . . #selflove#honesty#blackwoman#selfcare#illustrations#botanical#vintage#typography#typographydesign#florals#leaves#watercolour#homedecor#botanicalart#floralart#giftsforher#homedecor#vintagehomedecor#lockdown #lockdownlife#countryside#watercolourartist #watercolor_daily #watercolor_guide #watercolor_gallery#therapy#blackbritish #blackbritishbloggers #selflovejourney #selflovequotes

#NewBook that arrived a couple of days ago and is going into my book queue: I Am Not Your Baby Mother by @candicebrathwaite Not sure how long it'll be until I read it as I have 3 books currently on the go, and 6 more (7 now!) in the queue after those. My queue operates more like queuing at the bar of a pub or club (does anybody remember those?!) than like queuing in a shop 😆 #IAmNotYourBabyMother [Image description: Caz's hand holding the book in front of a partially unpacked box.]

My Style - Pink Riding Hood. I like things that remind me of childhood. I grew up reading the usual stories like ‘Red Riding Hood’ and the rest. The former left me with a thing for hoods. This faux fur hood had me at hello for that very reason. Hood shaped and faux fur? Yes please. Anyone who has been following me and the documentation of my personal style knows I am a sucker for faux fur. It is a texture thing and the furry (of the fake kind) lends to that. Both my scarf and headpiece are by made to order in the UK by @helenmooreengland . The family company makes some of the best faux furs. Soft, interesting colour ways and quite a varied selection of faux fur designs. Eternally grateful to them for the hat that takes me back to my early years. The meeting of those idyllic thoughts and my love for fuzzy textures is heaven. Check out Helen Moore and their faux furs @helenmooreengland . Big thanks to the G that is Lois Goswell. Had a ball taking these photographs. Her eye is second to none. Destiny’s Child #BWTquotes Michaela Coel - actress, screenwriter, director, producer and singer Back in 2006, the absurdly talented Michaela Coel was exploring her passion for music and performing spoken word in London’s open mic scene as Michaela The Poet. Encouraged by actor, playwright and director Ché Walker she applied to Guildhall and joined the Talawa Theatre Company summer school program TYPT. Chewing Gum Dreams, was her senior graduation project; a one-woman show telling the dramatic story of a 14-year-old girl named Tracey that would eventually become the E4 sitcom she would create and star in. Her BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance, critical acclaim for BBC One/HBO comedy-drama series I May Destroy You and Netflix credits are a testament to her vision and work ethic. 👉🏾 Tag a sista who is re-writing the rules. #michaelacoel #imaydestroyyou #chewinggum #blackearthrising #blackmirror #blackexcellence #blackgirlmagic #londontown #womeninfilm #blackbritish #melanin #blackbritishexcellence #blackwomen #blackgirlsrock #blackisbeautiful #explorepage #blackqueen #africa #ghanian
