With the holiday season among us, many of us are searching for the perfect gifts for our loved ones. As shoppers, we must try to be conscious consumers and purchase sustainable products if possible.
Our consumer-driven society is killing our planet and our forests. Over-fishing, poaching, overfilling landfills, etc… are all results of our society’s demand for producing more than we need. Deforestation and clear-cutting, in particular, can be driven by the rise of mass consumption. This includes the expansion of agriculture, mining, infrastructure projects, fuelwood harvesting, and unsustainable logging to keep up with society’s demand for more.
This holiday season, let’s all empower ourselves and honor our planet by consuming responsibly and sustainably, and educating ourselves on the environmental impact of all our purchases. “We don’t claim to be the answer to all the world’s problems,” environmental entrepreneur Ryan Lewis says, “but… it starts with one purchase at a time.”
