𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. Since Archer started to explore outside, we have been asked a lot of questions by bystanders and in DMs on how we trained him. I thought it would be amazing to put together our perspective on this topic, and share some tips like our furriends.💕
𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞! Before getting started, I wanted to remind all pawrents that every single milestone matters! This may sound intuitive but cats are NOT like dogs, and they go through a different journey. When Archer first started adventuring, he was terrified of every little noise. Slowly and surely, he was more exposed to the environment, and now feels much confident in a busy area.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏: 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬! Having a safe and comfortable harness is a critical start. Begin with play sessions in your home to ensure they are comfortable with moving around on a harness. It’s so embarrassing and funny that Archer flopped like a fish and couldn’t walk properly when he first had the harness on.😳
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐: 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! Get your kitty comfortable with various noises outside. Use a carrier/pet backpack with mesh opening and closed zippers on a less busy street, and let them watch all the unfamiliar objects, like cars or bicycles, pass by.🚙🚲Continue with this until they feel comfortable/confident to come out of the carrier/backpack.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟑: 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞! All cats need a safe space when they’re outside exploring.🎒 During long adventures or in foreign places, there will be times when Archer would feel spooked by certain things or feel tired from walking. Guess what? He is able to stay inside (or on top 😹) of the backpack. Like when an excited dog dashes towards him, he would watch out for it from a higher angle.😼
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟒: 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬! Don’t forget to bring their favourites treats and be prepared for nature’s calling. Remember to pack snacks (for reward and hydration), poopy bags, top-entry litter box for the car, cooling bandana, and frozen water (especially in summer☀️). You never know what’s coming!😹
