Dir: David F. Sandberg's
Stars: Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou
Plot: Billy Batson is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to be his new champion, allowing him to transform into an adult superhero with various superpowers.
Thoughts: The DC Extended Universe was off to a rocky start. But, after coming off from a couple of good movies, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. This Universe looks to be on the right track. And I was looking forward to this. I'm a fan of Zachary Levi.
It is not a perfect film, but it was a lot of fun. With his personality, charisma, and charm, Zachary Levi is the perfect Shazam. It is funny that they were trying to pick a "superhero name" even though there is a Marvel hero name Captain Marvel. I guess it is a rights issue. The relationship between Billy and Freddy felt natural. Plus, love the diversity of the kids.
The special effects looked great. The humor hits in all levels. And I am glad this movie isn't going to the dark tone, like what Warner Bros suggested at the beginning. Not all DC movies have to be dark and grounded. And "Shazam" has similarities with "Guardians of the Galaxy." Which is about family. Being separated from your parents. And founding love at the end.
Like most superhero movies, I felt the villain was underused. To be fair, I love Mark Strong, he is an amazing actor. He did great for what he is given. But, the villains obsession for NOT being the champion is kind of childish.
Overall, it is a fun movie. I would watch this again and again. The thing is, the DC Extended Universe needs to decide what kind of tone this Universe needs to be.
