Let’s talk about ✨consistency & structure✨
A While back ago I made a post about how I decided to stop sending Obi to daycare & keep him home since he was picking up some really bad behaviors from daycare, & since then I have learned my dog strives on schedule, structure, & consistency. He is definitely my child, that is for sure.
I had to get him into a routine, & once we nailed that down I realized wow, my extremely high drive, always going dog actually can chill the fuck out & does have an off switch.
Lately I have been seeing so many posts or stories like
“HELP, how do I get my dog to chill”
“what are some activities to help calm my dog down”
“how do I tire my dog out throughout the day”
& my answer to all of you is by having them do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Yup. You heard me… nothing. Well to you it’s nothing, to them it is a job.
Also... please don’t come at me and tell me your dog can’t relax. I have a 13 month old Aussie. I once thought the exact same thing.
So now you're wondering ok, well how do I achieve this… I am so glad you asked. It is called structure. You are giving your dog a job by either staying on place, crate time, or in a down stay. Structured walks are a great way to give your dog a job, but that’s a topic for another day.
Structure helps dogs achieve a calm mindset, and stay calm. Structure also gives your dog clarity and helps them understand your expectations of your dog. Believe it or not giving your dog a job that is mentally stimulating is as tiring as physical exercise.
Let’s go back to our college days for a second, and say it’s final day and you have 2 finals back to back & at the end of the day you're exhausted. You are just mentally drained. Same thing goes for our doggos. Having them stay calm is mentally exhausting & by keeping a schedule and being consistent with your dog you will start achieving a dog with a calm mindset way more often than before.
