One can’t help but wonder what the Dunwoody Chevron smells like as you’re face-masked and watching the magic happen in the back. Things were a little unusual this National Burger Day. But if one things rings true, it’s the fact that burgers have never brought people closer together than right now.
There’s beauty in patience. I never thought that I’d be more willing to have it while waiting to enter a gas station convenience store, but I’d set up a tent outside of NFA Burge if I needed to. Billy’s team has things under strict control with tape maintaining a six-foot distance between each customer and every worker donning PPE behind the counter. Once you place your order, they bring it out to your car, where you eat in the comfort of your seat. But wait, remember the line? How everyone, despite the distance between them, was connected by the wholehearted pursuit of a meal served up by wizards commanding the flat-top? It’s beautiful to see someone like Billy take a passion and transform it into an opportunity. With years of experience behind him, he’s managed to perfect the smashburger and serve it up to the masses through a small corner in unconventional digs. But as we all waited in that line, people across a spectrum of backgrounds bonded together over the common pursuit of something delicious in an oddly profound way. When we all take a bite, we all bond in that ecstasy. Those Lacey-edged patties with that gooey blanket of American cheese, those not-too-sour pickles with the ability to refresh like no other vegetable, those bits of onions scattered throughout the volume of the burger, and that sassy sauce, oh god, that sassy sauce, not like any other sauce that I’ve had and so impeccably composed that it’d hold its own if it was served as an option at every burger joint in America. And all these things (but really, so, so, so much more) straddled within a Martin’s Potato Roll.
There is no better embodiment of classic. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate National Hamburger Day; with this, I’m reminded of how, when all this is over, we’ll be able to join together again to share a bite of something great again. I can’t wait for that day.
