This is a page about walking with our dogs, making that experience better while also taking care of our environment. It’s a happy activity with a goal everyone can get behind. But it’s impossible to ignore the extraordinary events taking place on the streets where we walk.
Marches that arose because of, and to stop, police brutality are being met with literally breathtaking police brutality. This picture by Shane Aldendorff, simply sums it up: “FFS, he couldn’t breathe.” It doesn’t take special training to know breath is life #georgefloyd. Or know that breaking into someone’s home in the middle of the night will result in tragedy #breonnataylor. Or throwing someone head-first into a van will result in serious injury #freddiegray. The list is long and tragic.
Basic human decency, equal, consistent, enforced accountability, no matter who you are is required. Deep and fulsome institutional change is needed by every police department now, not tomorrow. No more ‘get out of jail free’ cards because you have a badge. The public trust will have to be earned, currently it’s not deserved, putting absolutely everyone in danger.
We share this world, we must learn to take care of it and each other. If we can do this, we also take care of ourselves. Cruelty has no place in a civilized society. I hope justice prevails and we take this window of clarity to reboot the USA, to let people who will unite us lead back to the ideas that made our country a beacon of hope for the world.
