Wine Pairing: Today, we talk about a region – The Spanish wine region of Rioja
COVID Headline of the Day – Philippines extends travel ban to prevent spread of more contagious corona virus variant (Raul Dancel – Straits Times)
I have only been to Spain for another of my passions, F1, however never for the purpose of wine. Spain is the third largest wine producer in the world, so as a wine lover it is at the top of my list for a visit once the bans are lifted! As some of you likely know, there are 69 (won’t go there) officially recognized wine regions in Spain. There are more than 200 grape varieties and two million acres of vineyards.
To make the wine map of Spain less confusing, it can be divided into seven distinct geographical areas: Northwest Spain, Duero River Valley, Ebro River Valley, The Mesata, Mediterranean Coast, Andalusia and the islands. I am most interested in the #LaRioja wine region which is located below the Cantabrian Mountains with vineyards occupying the Ebro Valley.
I was introduced to these wines early in my journey experiencing red wines and immediately fell in love with them. Specifically, from @Marques_Caceres being my first true Spanish love (many others left to try). Turns out I am not the only one! Wines from #Rioja Region are an outstanding dry red that are elevated by the use of Spain’s signature #Tempranillo grape - a black grape which gives big fruity flavour, somewhat similar to Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rioja wines are great casual drinkers being medium to full-bodied, medium tannin and a little less acidity with distinct oakiness. Food pairing, anything Spanish, grilled meats and smoky dishes or even corn and polenta. I cannot wait to taste a bottle while in the region it is produced. Here’s to travel bans being lifted, soon!!
Food for thought – The discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constellation. The universe is too full of stars.
