📌Finance - reponsible for ensuring that all bills are paid and invoices sent out. This is huge as for even a smallish operation, cash flow is essential for staying in business. Finance also includes keeping the financial accounts up to date and legal. ⠀
📌Logistics - this function makes sure all goods are transported to and from warehouses and customers. It also includes liaising with suppliers to get raw materials for making new products. Typically when orders are placed for products, the logistics department ensures there will be enough stuff in the store so that production can make the widget, chocolate bar, computer, car etc. ⠀
📌Sales and marketing - these people speak with customers, take orders, build relationships with new and existing clients, create customer awareness of products and services, create advertising campaigns and identify new product opportunuities. Without sales and marketing, there is no cutomer demand and therefore no sales. ⠀
📌IT - does what it says on the box. Makes sure all computer systems, communications systems, hardware and software work efficiently and for the purpose it was intended. They decide on what are the best systems to run the company and ensure they are implemented at the best price and keep working at all times. ⠀
📌HR - employ people, keep the company staffed appropriately, make sure everyone is paid the right amount and deal with issues affecting the human environment. They manage disputes with unions, issues to do with entitlements, leave and technical legal issues associated with pay claims. HR also help people in the organisation when they are depressed, bullied, harassed or treated unfairly. ⠀
📌General admin. this is a broad category that does all those fiddly yet vital things that keep the office working well. Secretaries, receptionists, personal assistants, delvery people, mail office staff etc.. They are the reason there is paper in the copier, coffee in the lunch room, cleaning contractors who turn up, managers who make it to meetings etc..
