A Kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in the Kidney out of substances in the urine. The stones are made up of concentrates such as oxalate, calcium and phosphorus. This occurs when minerals in the body combine with other substances and accumulate in the small ducts and tissues of the organ. Eventually they form a thick sludge, and then into stones.
In Chinese Medicine, many factors can contribute to Kidney stones depending on the individual. Generalized factors include poor diet, obesity, metabolic deficiencies, inflammation, gut health, hormonal regulation of minerals in the body, acidity/alkalinity and inadequate fluid intake. We look at imbalances stemming from the Kidney, Liver, Spleen organ systems as well as the pathogen we refer to as dampness.
Dampness is a failure to burn off or transform moisture in the body that can settle in the upper and lower body. It can result from the ingestion of dairy, sugar, refined carbs, excess raw vegetables, cold drinks, alcohol, fatty, greasy and deep-fried food as well as living in a particularly damp climate.
Strategic acupuncture for Kidney stones help to relieve associated pain and restore the flow of Qi and Blood to heal and reduce inflammation. An article published at Jiangxi Jiujiang Hospital of TCM recently made two important findings, that one– a combination of herbs and a prescription drug “enable the passage of Kidney stones.” And second, that, “adding acupuncture to the herbal medicine and drug protocol significantly increases positive patient outcome rates.”
Work with your practitioner to dissolve hard masses, drain dampness, relieve excess phlegm and promote the flow of Qi and Blood. Randomized trials have shown that people who made appropriate dietary changes reduced the risk for stone formation by 40 percent.
