A different perspective!
What you tell yourself about your dog is very powerful! Is your dogs story that they are sweet and sensitive, but lunge at other dogs or people?
Your dog was abused and that’s why they are really fearful and/or biting your neighbor?
They have jumped from home to home so that’s why they are anxious and need to feel safe?
Psychologically, the “story” you tell yourself about your dog affects you and how you interact with your dog.
Most dogs that behave badly have a difficult combo of genetics mixed w/ how whelping went (something the owner doesn’t really know about) and then the owners approach didn’t adapt to the difficult pups needs quickly. An overly exuberant pup that needs a firm approach vs. a timid pup that needs less pressure put on them (and still learn no, but not as intensely). Also how much they are emotionally loved, pet and given freedom, all factor in.
Then adolescence hits and you wonder where your difficult, but cute baby went and you get a whole new can of worms.
The excuses you make and the story you tell yourself, whether you raised the pup or adopted the dog, matters.
For instance: we have a Formosan mountain dog w/ permanent scaring around the neck from an imbedded collar in Taiwan, where he was going to be someone’s lunch! 🍽
Then, he came to the states and was never given a proper “no”. That very likely has to partly do with his sad “story” and the owners wanting him to just feel loved. He became out of control aggressive within a few years and was returned to the rescue. Then, we got him and he we’ll always deal with some aggressive tendencies, but otherwise is a pretty solid and easy dog to have around.
Maverick is a perfect example of how his “story” ruined him. When we work with Maverick we only saw what was in front of us. We went slow to learn about him and his personality sensitivity-wise, but his history, traumatic and sad past didn’t matter. It was time to move forward.
The important adjustments come from learning if your dog has really been through a lot OR very likely has just never been challenged, so they are very sensitive. Continued in comments...
