I love this. But I think there are two valid, equally important sides to this story. We live in a society overrun with masculine energy that runs on a constant even keel. There's no room for the fluctuating feminine energy that runs in cycles like the moon (and especially not in the workforce drive by $$$)... Yes, I can do anything you can do bleeding. And most of the time I do. But should I have to? No, absolutely not. We stifle and squash our natural need for deep rest, reflection and nourishment while we bleed, because of the society we live in - a society that says suck it up princess, take an Ibuprofen, don’t tell anyone you need to lay down because you’re cramping, sit at your desk and work harder and grimace through your discomfort and fatigue. Pretend you’re a man with no uterus, pretend you’re not busy doing the biological work necessary for the continuation of our species, pretend you don’t need extra rest and care as your body purges up to 80mL of blood and endometrial tissue in preparation for a new cycle, pretend your hormones and energy levels aren’t at their lowest level of your entire menstrual cycle, pretend that you feel fantastic, pretend that it’s fine that you receive no economic benefit for the biological work you do for the continuation of a capitalist society. But you know what? Your body will thank you in the long run if you honour what it is trying to say to you. If you need rest while you bleed, take it - take it in any way you need, and don’t feel guilty for one second. Honour the natural need for quietness, rest and reflection that this stage of your cycle so often brings.

YES! You can #pee with a menstrual cup inside you. You do not have to take it out for those of you asking because urine doesn't exit the body via your #vagina. It exists via your urethra. These are 2 completely different openings in btw our legs. You #menstruate through the vaginal opening as shown in the diagram. The #urethra is a very tiny opening and only #urine can pass through it. The #vaginal opening is for sex, #childbirth, #menstruation, #menstrualcups and #tampons. Please bear with us for being this basic. We thank God if you already know these things but many do not #know and keep asking us. That's why it is important to take a mirror once in a while and look at your vagina. Many #women claim they have never looked and have no business looking at it from the comments we received on our last post encouraging women to take a mirror and look. So it is clear some have absolutely no idea what is where down there. ~ 🩸not only women menstruate🩸 ~ I want to address the topic of gender and menstruation. Although I am a cisgender woman, today I also want to acknowledge the NB & trans men who menstruate, and equally those who are biologically female who cannot menstruate. For many trans men, who may not to take hormones that stop menstruation or may not have surgery to change genitals, or who may not yet have an option, menstruating can be hugely dysphoric to gender identity. Even for those who don’t find that, they are often excluded from discussions on menstrual health or issues, when really we need to acknowledge al gender identities within menstrual or gynaecological conditions. People often draw a line as menstruation marking entry to womanhood which can be very alienating equally to woman who can’t menstruate including those who are trans or those with health conditions. If you menstruate, listen closely ✖️ Reusable menstrual products will always be my favourite eco-switch 🌻 ⠀ .⠀ I started using a menstrual cup to reduce my waste (we don’t have a bin by the toilet anymore!), but I’ve benefited SO MUCH personally 💚 Financial savings, body awareness, waste reduction, less hassle (e.g. when you’re in a COVID-19 lockdown and you get your period), soooo comfy.⠀ .⠀ I use a cup from @mycupnz but I’m aware not everyone can use a cup: our bodies are so different, and we all have preferences!⠀ .⠀ Here are THREE reusable period products that I’ve tried & tested, so fire your questions my way!☀️⠀ .⠀ CUPS: This is my personal weapon of choice. I’ve used a cup for 3+ years. They hold around 20ml, depending on the size (there are SO many different sizes so email @mycupnz to get recommendations- they sell many brands, not just their own NZ made cups!). You can keep it in for 8 hours. Feel nothing. Carry on with activities (yoga, water sports, exercise). Save thousands- I literally worked out the math ($2,400 over 10 years)💰 - lasts 10 years.⠀ .⠀ PERIOD UNDERWEAR: Can hold up to 3 tampons worth (depending on size/style). Use all month long (they’re so damn comfy). Easy to wash 💚⠀ .⠀ REUSABLE PADS/LINERS: Use like a normal pad: for 2-4 hours. Easy to wash. Super freaking cute fabric instead of nasty plastic on your skin! 🌱⠀ .⠀ QUESTIONS?! No question is silly! Promise! ❗️Fake News Alert ❗️ If you are on the OCP (oral contraceptive pill) you cannot have a period. Yep, read that again. - The amount of women who are using the OCP which tell me they are on their period, that they have period pain or that their period is coming due to bad skin, is f**king alarming. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The false information which is fed to us thanks to a patriarchal health care system is incredibly concerning, with majority of women using the pill not understanding that they are not menstruating. - If you are unable to conceive (hence the word contraceptive) then why is there a thought that you can menstruate? This highlights the lack of understanding that many women have about how their cycles work. Just so we are all clear; You must ovulate to produce a period, and ovulation is what allows us to conceive. This is shut down by the OCP, hence the ability to avoid pregnancy. - Please, for the love of vaginas, can we stop referring to a with drawl bleed (yep, that’s whats happening if you’re on the pill) as a period? At one point, Daddy K turns to me and says, ‘what’s wrong?’ I reply, ‘I don’t know, I just feel uncomfortable and I am trying to sit with myself and figure out why. I feel frustrated.’ So I go shopping. (Because.. retail therapy is fun) I try on clothes. I’m horrified with how I feel (and look...) I’m anxious. I shop anyway... (because the whole family decided to leave me be - should have seen the writing on the wall at this point!!). This girl here BUYS NEW BIKINIS. 👏🏻 That in itself deserve a medal. You think that’s the end of this story? Of course not. Goes to pool. Should now be happy because sun and water is my happy place. Nope. Still feels meh. Comes back to the room... SURPRISE! 🩸 Did I ruin new bikinis (they’re mostly white)!? Why am I so shocked? 😂 (Ok ok in my defence it is super early but that’s a story for another day...) It’s really true. Blame it on purity culture. Lack of education. An attempt to control women. Whatever you want to attribute this horrible misconception to. Regardless of its origin and where the blame is placed, the worst part is that this myth exists at all and has existed for quite some time. I will speak of this topic often. Because that fear, distrust and lack of understanding was not only in my mind in my younger years but in the minds of others I spoke with and learned from as well. From the day of my very first period I was told I was now of fertile age and capable of getting pregnant at any time. I was not taught about fertile windows. I was not taught about ovulation signs. I was not taught that for the majority of my cycle I was actually infertile. My goal with this page and as a FAM educator is to break down that misunderstanding, the myths, the outright lies. I know many women will be drawn to this more so, but my hope is that our younger sisters will hear this message as well. Our teenage girls, our daughters, our nieces, our granddaughters; my hope is that myths will be dispelled and truth will reign from the first menstrual cycle, to the last, and beyond. All our girls, our women, deserve that.

🌸ENDOMETRIOSIS🌸 To carry on with endometriosis awareness week, I wanted to do a post to tell you all about this gynaecological condition and hopefully spread awareness!🌺 Endometriosis is a condition where tissue that is similar to the tissue that grows in the lining of your womb, begins to grow in other areas such as the ovaries and/or the fallopian tube. Endometriosis can be very painful and can impact have a significant impact on your life, especially with your fertility so if you experience any symptoms you should go get checked by your GP🌻 Symptoms can include excessive pain during your periods that stops you from doing normal activities, pelvic and lower back pain and pain during or after sex. You can also experience sickness and diarrhoea as well as difficulty conceiving. Unfortunately at the moment there is no cute for endometriosis but there are treatments to help cope and manage this condition🌼 It is recorded that 1 in 10 women of a reproductive age suffer with endometriosis, it is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK. On average it takes 7.5 years from the onset of symptoms to get diagnosed. 🌸MY SO-CALLED ‘FLAWS’ ARE NOT FLAWS🌸 So wait, you’re telling me that my body rolls, hip dips and muffin top are supposed to be my flaws? Pfft, please, I love these features of my body just as much as the rest of me🌻 We hide these parts of ourselves because we are made to feel ashamed of them. That they don’t fit the ideal body type, they aren’t normal, we should feel disgusted by them and get rid of them/hide them, but I’m tired. I’m tired of hating these parts of my body that are a part of me and a part of who I am. Why am I hiding them? And who am I hiding them for? If you don’t like them that’s cool, carry on scrolling I don’t care, but I want to feel liberated and free, not shamed🌺 This label, a flaw, well I want to get rid of it. By teaching girls that they should be proud of their flaws, we are still reinforcing the idea that flaws exist, so there posses things that aren’t ‘normal.’ We need to take away this idea of a flaw and just love how our body evolves to our life and how we treat it. Loving yourself is so important and yes, I understand it is such a long journey and it’s not easy, but once you start, oh my will it begin to open your eyes and the feeling of being loved by you, is like no other🌼 I don’t want to hide my body, and I’m not going to let society tell me how I should present myself to the world. 🌸THINGS I WISH I HAD LEARNT IN SEX ED🌸 My sex education was minimal. It consisted of my R.E teacher bringing in his wife to teach us how put a condom on a carrot/cucumber...yeah, basic. We touched a little on STI’s and how vaginal sex is carried, the do’s, the don’ts and the basics of consent but I had to learn so much on my own. Through experience, the luck of having an older sister to talk me through stuff I was unsure about and just a sprinting things happening in my society. Other than that, everything was pretty basic🌻 Diversity in my sex education was non existent. The LGBTQ+ community was not included whatsoever, we weren’t taught that heterosexuality isn’t the only type of sexuality and that there is no shame in masturbation. There’s no talk into how to check ourselves, encouragement into getting to know ourselves and how to avoid certain infections such as thrush, bacterial vaginosis and water infections! Knowing that I needed to pee after sex every time would’ve been incredibly useful information👌🏼🌺 I understand that there is a certain level of information that teaches can’t portray due to safeguarding, but sex education needs to improve. There needs to be more diversity, understanding and it needs to be more thorough🌼 This is why I aim to spread information through this blog and supply you with knowledge that you might not receive elsewhere🌸 I want to know, what do you wish you learnt in sex education that would’ve been helpful to you later on in life? Doch auch die Konsistenz dieser sagt ganz schön viel über den Zustand deiner Gebärmutterschleimhaut aus. Deshalb folgt jetzt der zweite Teil zu unserer Periodenblut-Reihe! 🩸 Eine flüssige bzw. wässrige Menstruation deutet auf eine schwache Blutung hin. In Kombination mit einer rosa Farbe kann dies ein Hinweis auf Stress sein. Wenn deine Menstruation wässrig und eher grau ist, solltest du deinen Frauenarzt aufsuchen. 🩸 Eine dickflüssige oder klumpige Konsistenz ist völlig normal, meistens ist diese auch dunkelrot. Bei Klumpen oder Gerinnseln handelt es sich um Reste der Gebärmutterschleimhaut. 🩸 Eine glatte und sehr schleimige Menstruation ist ebenfalls sehr normal. Hierbei vermischt sich Blut mit Zervixschleim. Nachdem das schottische Parlament bereits vor einiger Zeit entschlossen hatte kostenfreie Menstruationsprodukte in öffentlichen Orten zur Verfügung zu stellen, ziehen einige Länder mit. 🇳🇿 So hat die neuseeländische Regierung vor einigen Tagen entschieden, ab Juni Periodenprodukte in Schulen kostenlos zur Verfügung zu stellen. Grund dafür waren jahrelange Bitten von Schulen und Organisationen. Immer mehr Mädchen sind dem Unterricht ferngeblieben, da sie sich die Hygieneprodukte schlicht nicht leisten konnten. 🇫🇷 Auch Frankreich sagte diese Woche den Kampf gegen Periodenarmut an und bietet an Universitäten künftig kostenlose Periodenprodukte an. Laut einer Umfrage unter französischen Studentinnen war eine von drei von Periodenarmut betroffen. Mit dem Beginn der Kurse im Herbst soll dies durch aufgestellte Spender der Vergangenheit angehören. I've spent the last few weeks trying to find an organization to get involved with that focuses on menstrual equity. While I've come across many amazing Instagram pages and movements, I have also found many that are solely focused on women and the femininity of periods. I did a bit of research to refresh what I know about inclusive periods and I figured no time is a bad time for a reminder and to learn (or unlearn)! 🌸VAGINISMUS🌸 You may never have heard of this but I promise you, it’s something worth knowing🌻 Vaginismus is said to affect between 5-17% of women so it is very rare in terms of female health conditions but it can have heavy affects on your sex life. It is largely neglected in the medical community because so many don’t know enough about its causes and the biological nature of vaginismus, but it was worth spreading because more sufferers can come forward if they are aware of what’s happening to them🌺 Simply put Vaginismus is the involuntary contractions of the vagina out of fear of penetration. It does have some psychological relations but the one thing to know is that Vaginismus occurs on its own, the tightening of the vagina muscles contract on their own because something is telling the body to react this way to penetration🌼 This is nothing to be embarrassed about at all. It is a rare condition but more women than we know are suffering from it, they are just unaware of what it is or are too scared to talk, but this is important. Is He Pulling Out, Sis? Be Careful! ⚠️ You've probably heard that the #PullOut method is an unreliable and risky form of contraception. Breastfeeding (BF) during postpartum (PP) makes those risks superior. When BF, a mother needs lowered estrogen to produce #breastmilk. The effects of lowered #estrogen can contribute to the depletion of #energy faster, more strain on the #hormonal emotions like #PostpartumDepression as well as the body’s delay to #menstruate. We live our young lives understanding that ‘no missed period means no baby.’ However, those rules are completely false during PP and whilst BF. Many moms won’t see their periods return until well after BF has ended; some up to a full year PP. Other moms, who #supplement with #formula or who’s baby is #weaning to start solids may see their periods return sooner. No matter the timeline, one thing will forever remain a FACT during PP: You can get pregnant without your PP #period returning and especially while Breastfeeding. For the many of us 👀 disgusted by any form of contraceptive- we've been given a #moniker in modern society. They call us the “pull-out generation”- women who rely on pulling-out as their primary form of #contraception. Many of us are either married or in long-term monogamous relationships. Getting pregnant again would not be, “the end of the world.” We are women who track our #ovulation cycles and love our kids. We are also the #women who, if not currently pregnant, may have just had babies. Most of us will fight you right now for mumbling to us the idea of having another #baby (for now at least). Becoming #pregnant while BF is very common and some moms have been successful at avoiding 2 #babies under 2 yrs old this way. 🌸5 WAYS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR VULVA🌸 The vulva is such a sensitive and vital part of our bodies so we must take care and know how to look after it because it is so easy to upset our vulva and make it susceptible to many digestion infections and diseases🌺 At a young age we are definitely not educated enough on the difference between our vulva and vagina, how to check the area and look out for anything out of the ordinary and just generally the vulva itself! But we really need to look after it and be checking it on the regular like we do our boobs, our testicles and other parts of our bodies🌻 So, here are 5 different and easy ways you can look after your vulva: 1. You should only be cleaning your vulva with warm water - it is self cleansing! If you really feel like adding some soap down there, please use unfragranced and unscented soaps like Sanex. 2. Don’t Double Dip! - When having sex, it is a good idea to not undergo vaginal penetration and anal penetration within the same sexual sitting. But if you’re feeling frisky at least go front to back so you don’t upset the bacteria in your vagina. 3. Ditch the undies at night time! - I scream and shout about this because your vulva needs air flow!! 4. Always pee after sex - you must do this to clear the vagina out of any bad bacteria and void getting water infections! 5. How well do you understand you cycle? Have a read of this summary 👇👇 MENSTRUATION Menses (the time you are bleeding) is the start of your cycle🩸 and the start of the follicular phase. FOLLICULAR PHASE This is the phase when an egg matures and gets ready to be released. People notice they may have higher energy levels during this phase 💪 OVULATION 🥚 Ovulation is characterised by a a spike in oestrogen. This is the time when the egg is released and you are your most fertile if you are trying to conceive. You may notice you have a higher libido during ovulation😏 LUTEAL The luteal phase follows ovulation. Oestrogen drops following ovulation and Progesterone levels rise during this phase, peaking approximately 5 days before your period. What is your point of focus that helps to help keep you grounded, centered and balanced throughout your cycle? In Sanskrit this is called drishdi दृष्टि, or focused gaze, and is a means for developing concentrated intention. It is associated with the fifth limb of yoga called pratyahara which translates as sense withdrawal, as well as the sixth limb dharana relating to concentration. In Nepal, wearing the tika, is a ritual that is seeded in focused awareness and increasing the wearers ability to concentrate. Life can be filled with a never ending list of “to-do’s” and surprise changes that can throw us off course. This can sometimes leave us ungrounded and not feeling like we are living a peaceful and fulfilling life. My drishdi is having a dedicated practice. Having a daily spiritual focus is the main thing that keeps me in steady alignment with my vision, goals and higher self. The part of me that is innately in-tune with love, compassion and wholeness. Wir haben für euch zwei Situationen, in denen euer Körper alles andere als schwach ist. 💪🏽 Während der Schwangerschaft: Besonders während der Schwangerschaft arbeitet der weibliche Körper auf Hochtouren, er muss von nun an nicht mehr ein, sondern gleich zwei Lebewesen versorgen. Der Rücken trägt plötzlich eine viel schwerere Last, jegliche Organe befinden sich an anderen Stellen und machen Platz für das kleine Lebewesen. Ist euch bewusst, was für eine Leistung das ist? 💪🏽 Während der Periode: Noch viel häufiger als eine Schwangerschaft, hat eine Frau ihre Menstruation. Und auch, wenn jede Frau ihre Periode anders wahrnimmt, kann gesagt werden, dass sich während jeder Periode eine krasse Veränderung im Körper abspielt. Der komplette Hormonhaushalt verändert sich, deine Gebärmutter zieht sich zusammen, um die Gebärmutterschleimhaut schneller abzustoßen. All das verursacht die typischen Begleiterscheinungen wie Krämpfe oder Stimmungsschwankungen. Und wieder leistet der weibliche Körper großartiges. Raise your hand if you’ve heard any of these cycle myths before 👋🏼 • These keep circulating and so I’ll keep knocking them down. 💪🏼 • There is no one size fits all when it comes to cycles. • They can vary in length, flow, color, when you ovulate, and STILL be considered normal. • What’s NOT normal? Excessive pain, too short or too long between cycles, lack of a period, too heavy of a period, etc (see my previous post for what’s considered not normal). • Okay, so what if yours isn’t “normal”? Start with the foundational habits to support your cycle (another previous post) and work with a practitioner to move up the ladder to more advanced interventions - functional testing, gut testing, targeted supplementation, etc. • I do this with my clients every day because they deserve to have a predictable cycle with a period that doesn’t cause them to be bedridden every time, and so do you. 💕

🌸WEDNESDAY’S NEWS ROUNDUP🌸 Please take the time to read this, it is so important right now.🌻 Over the past few years, millions of Uighur men and women have been detained in, what China calls, ‘internment/re-education camps’ to become stripped of their religious beliefs and freedoms in order to conform with China’s communist society. Uighur people hold Islamic beliefs but due to the perceived notions that coincide with the Muslim faith, Uighur’s are seen as potential terrorists and therefore extremists. China does not condone the practice of Islamic faith so detain the Uighur people into an oppressive system of surveillance, detention, indoctrination and in some reports, forced sterilisation that are continually spreading over the province of Xinjiang. Inside reports have spoken of women being raped, tortured, assaulted and sexually abused and thousands of Uighur people go missing every year. China’s reports speak of ‘detail planning and spending for “transformation through education” of “key groups” - which is bullshit. In one of the documents presented by the Kunes county justice system from 2017 and 2018, they describe the “education” process as “washing brains, cleansing hearts, strengthening righteousness and eliminating evil” - again, bullshit. These people are being detained and abused because of their religious beliefs by a toxic communist government and it is a grave example of a worldwide attack on human rights. Foundational habits to support your menstrual cycle 🔁 • What can you do to help regulate your cycle and reduce period symptoms? • Go back to the basics! • Of course, some women may have the basics down and still experience the annoying, debilitating symptoms that come every month. • If that’s you, I recommend working with a practitioner to do additional hormone (such as via the DUTCH test) and thyroid testing, improve gut health, ensure you’re consuming adequate nutrients, balance blood sugar, etc. - the more advanced things. • But without a foundation, it’s hard to skip right to the advanced layers. • If these foundations of health aren’t in your day to day, then you should reassess and start here. • What are some health basics you make sure to include in your life? 💕

I just needed to do a PSA. People who menstruate, and I mean EVERYONE who menstruate...please, please get a pap smear test every year! Back in August, I had an abnormal pap smear, so I had to do a colonoscopy to get it checked more. Turned out that I had precancerous cells in my cervix. I had then the leep procedure done (which was what my gynecologist recommended for me). I am still waiting to make sure that she got it all! But please, it's very important to get checked every year! I'm so thankful they caught it early for me. Keep in mind, I'm only 28. In honour of updating the blog post I wrote last year about all kinds and many brands of reusable menstrual products available at @mycupnz (link in bio) I'm starting a conversation: How do YOU period? 🩸 . I'll start: I use a menstrual cup 98% of the time. Sometimes, I'll use period underwear on the days my period is going to arrive, or at the very end of my period. My period is light and manageable, especially compared to when I was a teenager and had to use both a pad and tampon and change after every class at school (I have low platelets, which means I bleed and bruise easily- even though my platelets are still low, my periods are 100x more easy to manage now I'm older). Some months I hardly notice my period, but last month I wanted to start a campaign to normalise lying in bed on the first day of your cycle. My husband, @timmay.hall , is the best at having period chats, and I feel lucky to have discovered reusable period products when I was 19.
