Ten years ago, I was working in corporate America as a marketing consultant for a large insurance agency. I had checked all the grown-up boxes...went to college, got married, bought a house, and was about to have my first baby. Everything was going according to "plan." Then, my sweet Chase was born. And a deep love that I had never felt before ripped through me and, well, changed everything. My husband and I had literally *just* built the house of our dreams before Chase was born. We poured blood, sweat, and tears into building it and we had intended for it to be our "forever" home. I went back to work after my maternity leave and I was completely disconnected from my work (if I'm being honest, I was never connected to marketing insurance to begin with). ;) I felt a strong urge to be at home more, and I didn't know what to do. The house we'd built was a two-income home and I couldn't imagine leaving that. (also: this post isn't about whether moms should or should not stay at home...this is about listening to my instincts at that time in my life). 💗 So, I let this urge, this conviction to be at home more with my new son, burn inside me for several months. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I asked my husband to take the next Monday off work while Chase was in daycare and I told him I was miserable and sad and felt like I wanted to find work that allowed me to be at home more. Fortunately, my husband didn't bat an eyelash. He was on board right away. So, I quit my job, we sold our beloved house, and moved into my in-laws (lovely, but tiny) condo until we could figure out our next steps. It was painful and hard at times, but I like my new story better. I eventually went back to school to become a certified holistic coach and today I'm doing work that I love while getting to spend more time with my kids. What about you? Happy Day of Disability!⠀ ⠀ These pictures are exactly a year apart, and do you know what the biggest difference is? A year ago, I had no idea I was autistic! And I was still trying so hard to make my brain work like everyone else's.⠀ ⠀ Some people call autism their superpower, and while that's absolutely valid for them, I've never felt that way myself. ⠀ ⠀ But my ASD is still a lot of important things: it's my filter. Through it I find my strengths, my weaknessnes, my kindness, my voice, and my disability. Learning who I was allowed me to accept and appreciate so many things about myself that I hated in the past (and finding an amazing partner certainly helped too). ⠀ ⠀ Not everyone with ASD is disabled, but for me, my inability to work full time or function with full independence puts me in that catagory. And that's okay! It's who I am, and I'm not worth less because I can't produce more. I'm proud of who I am. ⠀ ⠀ And I'm proud of this community. No matter how many times we're kicked to the ground, we get back up. It's still acceptable in many people’s eyes to mock us, to degrade us, to use slurs against us, but we never give up our voice. Your number one priority should always be you and your needs. It should never be overextending yourself to accommodate your partner. If it is, then you might be in a codependent relationship, or one where your needs come second to the needs of your partner. This is an unhealthy relationship dynamic, and can easily lead to control and manipulation. Instead, strive to fight codependency by tuning into your own needs and advocating for them. When things turn upside down, what does "feeling like yourself" feel like?⁣ ⁣ After a beautifully busy weekend in Calgary, the minute my flight hit Toronto, I hit the ground running. ⁣ ⁣ & I ran straight through November into December into a burnout. ⁣ ⁣ As I worked through this burnout, I noticed moments when I was starting to feel like myself until I was wholely myself again. ⁣ ⁣ This episode piqued my curiosity enough to wonder what does it feel to feel like myself? ⁣ ⁣ For me, I know that I feel like myself when: ⁣ ⁣ I wake up rested ⁣ ⁣ Read a little ⁣ ⁣ Exercise & stretch ⁣ ⁣ Enjoy music ⁣ ⁣ Call and connect with my family and friends ⁣ ⁣ Reply to text messages and emails ⁣ ⁣ & generally stay connected with the world. ⁣ ⁣ Whenever I stop doing the above, I know that something isn't working and I'll take a moment to rest and reconnect with myself. ⁣ ⁣ Burnouts happen and they signal to us that something is missing. ⁣ ⁣ More often than not, it's reminding us to get back to ourselves. ⁣ ⁣ So with December already here, take a moment to make a mental list of things you do when you feel like yourself and check it with that list often. ⁣ #yoga #headstand #toronto #movement #studio #potd #ootd #thoughts #mentalhealth #mobility #smile #write #writing #thoughts #foodforthought #share #love

Yesterday my boys and I played hooky and went for a walk around @bluehillfarm before picking up some local produce, bread and soup. 🍠 🧄 Just .13 miles into our trail walk, I saw a woman approaching with her yappy dog wearing a plaid sweater (the dog... and her) and I guided Tom 🦮 to the side to avoid an interaction. The yapper yapped while my ankle fell off the trail and snapped 😬. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, my tolerance for pain is zilch. Fingers in drawers, falling down stairs, and once: a Charley horse, have all led to me throwing up and blacking out. 🤢 So I quickly collapsed my butt onto a log to rest and sob 😭 as I jokingly reminded Jesse how screwed I am to someday have deliver a baby 🤰🏼. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He laughed and said “plus you look like Giuliani” as the mascara I’d put on to try to make life feel a little less pandemic-y was dripping down my face. (Swipe ➡️ for the uncanny comparison.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ Last month I did a bunch of my keynote speech 🎤 about “turning ahh’s into haha’s.” One of the points I hit home is that 🌟 : ONLY WHEN YOU'RE ABLE TO LAUGH FULLY & FREELY ARE YOU ABLE TO LIVE FULLY & FREELY. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I really stand by that. Most of us ,if not all of us, were brought up with the notion that validation comes from external sources (aka other people) Succeed in a sport? Here’s a medal Get good grades? Be rewarded by parents or the school You think if you’re a good employee You will be given a raise to validate your hard work. The problem is we start to seek this validation in every aspect of our lives. We gauge our successes or hard work on what OTHERS say to us, or about us. This is why social media is so huge right now. The problem is that what we really need to hear we often don’t get from outside sources. I think it’s really important for us to work on getting this from ourselves and teaching the next generation that their sense of accomplishment should not come from others. A good way to do this is to write down all of the things you WISH someone would say to you, like..... Mental health talk 🤯 . I know a lot of us are dealing with anxiety right now and yes I'm right in there with you. . I have been dealing with anxiety and OCDs all my life. Pretty much as far as I can remember. . To me anxiety shows up when there is no certainty, when changes occurs, when I have too much to do, when I sleep poorly, when ANY minor inconvenience is thrown my way and push me away from the detailed perfect plan I had in my head. . I also absorb anxiety , that's what it feels like. I feel any slight changes around me , I feel when someone isn't happy and my brain makes me think this is automatically my fault. . I usually use humour (and other things) to hide all this internal turmoil . This year I decided to act and started therapy to free myself from this litteral hell that it can be inside of me sometimes. Before anyone says anything, this post isn't a cry for help or attention. If I wanted attention, I'll show my ass, it works better. . I just want to share it with you as it is a massive part of me and lately it has taken a lot of importance. I really put myself at the top priority, and I am trying to be aware of what I actually want and don't want to do.. . And what I do not want to do lately is to post some content. There is too much going on , this in and out lockdown thing is litteraly draining me and it would just feel pretentious for me to post how to do a fucking deadlift because all I actually want to talk about is mental health. . For now anyway. . Don't get me wrong I do love my job and I'm definitely not saying I am giving up on everything 😅 What I'm saying however is how much training helps you get out of your thoughts. I moved out of the idea of training for an outcome, I'm training because it makes me feel like I'm that bitch. . And this is what I want to do really, help other people that like me, struggle with anxiety. Because theast thing we want to hear is "don't be anxious , it is all good". I want to help people see how badass they can be, regardless if what is going on inside their head. . Long post sorry, thank you for coming to my TED talk 💜 .

If you have always been the "black sheep", you know exactly what I mean! AND, if you are anything like me, you have probably struggled throughout life wondering if you all ever be good enough. The quest for true happiness might feel just out of reach and you have accepted the fact that you will never experience the joy, peace, and fulfillment that deep in your heart, you know you deserve. I tried therapy, took courses, read every self-help book I could get my hands on, and everything else that I could find and I was still stuck. Then... Almost a decade ago, I had an AHA experience that changed my life. I finally unstop once and for all what was holding me back from enjoying and living my best life. I felt tension disappear and the weight lift off of my shoulders. My negative thoughts vanished. I became more grounded and confident. The anger, sadness, and anxiety I had felt for years began to fade. My relationships became more joyous. I finally broke my lifelong people-pleasing and codependent patterns. Toxic BS went away and I attracted friends and lover(s) that treat me with respect and kindness. I stopped hiding behind the mask that felt safe and let my true self shine. I stopped obsessing over problems that haunted me for years because I finally knew what to do and had the courage to do it. Most of us are taught the wrong things about how to love ourselves and what and how to "feel". We overanalyze and deny who we really are and what we really feel. What if you had an option and learned that just because it is a challenge, that doesn't mean it's difficult? What if the quickest path to transformation was already within you? ⁣ We can often getting to a battle of mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. Social media can also affect our wellbeing. I often notice on the days my screen time is higher I to tend to feel lower. ⁣ ⁣ But lets pause for a moment and just focus on our breathing ... ⁣ This calming breathing technique for stress, anxiety and panic takes just a few minutes and can be done anywhere.⁣ ⁣ You will get the most benefit if you do it regularly, as part of your daily routine.⁣ ⁣ You can do it standing up, sitting in a chair that supports your back, or lying on a bed or yoga mat on the floor.⁣ ⁣ Make yourself as comfortable as you can. If you can, loosen any clothes that restrict your breathing.⁣ ⁣ If you're lying down, place your arms a little bit away from your sides, with the palms up. Let your legs be straight, or bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor.⁣ ⁣ If you're sitting, place your arms on the chair arms.⁣ ⁣ If you're sitting or standing, place both feet flat on the ground. Whatever position you're in, place your feet roughly hip-width apart.⁣ ⁣ * Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable, without forcing it.⁣ ⁣ * Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.⁣ ⁣ * Breathe in gently and regularly. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5. I'm a huge advocate for mental health. It's in my blood as a human and a Social worker. My memoir 27.3 which is under editing, addresses mental health within the Black community by telling my story. In the hiking community, I have heard from others who have done the AT, that discussions about mental health are unwelcoming. But I'm not about to be silent about it. Too many times, anxiety has attacked me in the woods. Over the summer I freaked out after seeing my first bear, got lost, came out in a Trump neighborhood, was followed by a truck and had a panic attack. Now it's December and walking through the forest is a breeze. I have much more confident. Through therapy I have learned to immerse the senses and focus on breathing techniques. I'm also a medical marijuana patient and that helps tremendously with anxiety depending on the strain. By no means is my anxiety gone but I've learned ways of coping and redirecting it. Yesterday as I was getting ready to start my day I did something that I normally don’t do. I stopped to look in the mirror, and the first time ever I actually like how I looked. I started to feel self love. Being constantly bullied and harassed throughout school people made it to where I hated myself. The hate that I had for myself was so terrible to a degree that I just did not want to be alive. I can honestly say that I am happy where I am at in life. I’m glad that I did not end my battle with my mental health and self hate issues. I’m stronger and better then ever. ..............................................................................................................................Now reflecting on the ones that cause me so much pain and suffering all throughout school I don’t wish anything negative towards you. In fact I just feel sorry for you. I’m sorry that you felt the need to make someone else’s life a living hell because there was some part inside of you that was hurting. I was talking about this just yesterday: how can people be aware of mental health conditions when they’re just not as visible as physical ones? I also opened up to a friend telling them my story. They told me I should talk more about how I feel So yeah, here I am. I’m speaking now and I want to be heard My therapist told me she doesn’t like to use the word ‘disorder’ when referring to a mental health condition because it makes ‘too much noise’, it’s ‘too loud’ Well. Guess what. It has to be loud Just because we may be silent, do not assume our minds are quiet as well I want to make noise. It has to be loud. It has to be heard

“You’ll never be good enough.” “We’re just average.” “Humble yourself, you’re too much.” “He’s an actor, he’s just acting.” “You’re a loser.” . . Oh man oh man, let’s open up a can of worms this morning shall we?! Chances are you’ve heard some form of the quotes above and they’ve stuck with you to this very day whether you know it or not, they’ve become your LIMITING BELIEFS. Things that have been told to you by loved ones or people you held in high regard that your brain had no other choice but to hold onto and believe and you’ve carried that weight with you to this day. It influences the way you carry yourself, the people you surround yourself with, the substances you choose to consume, your sleep patterns, etc. Pretty fucked up, huh? Now, how the hell do we thrive in life with such trauma inducing triggers planted all around our mind like a minefield?! We don’t. And we haven’t for quite some time now. But we can start if we decide to CHANGE. Change the way our brain thinks by exercising, eating healthy, acknowledging when things/people do not serve you, t-h-e-r-a-p-y, etc. This is something I’ve been dissecting within myself for the past year and although it’s a daily battle I find myself winning more often than not by taking proactive steps towards being proud of myself and who I’m becoming. Who I am today isn’t even close to who I was 10 years, 5 years, 1 year ago and I’m extremely stoked on that. You’re not supposed to be who you were last week, you’re supposed to be ever-changing, adapting, and evolving into someone that YOU love and someone that YOU are proud of. Fuck those limiting beliefs and the trauma horse they rode in on. Change your brain. Fight the good fight today!

Insanely grateful for everyone who has supported us this year ❤ I know the numbers don't matter, but seeing people resonate with what we create means more than I can put into words (ironic?😂), and this year was nuts! 📚 today marks the ‘international day of persons with disabilities’ and we’re here to bring some education to yo’ timelines! 🧠 it’s worrying that some people only recognise disabilities as traits that are prominently visible. but that could not be further from the truth. non-visible forms of disabilities exist - including those who suffer with a mental health illness. it’s imp we recognise this so we can use these statistics to better understand disabilities & to better support those with one. 🙌🏽 if someone is opening up to you about their experiences w their disability or impairment - be all ears. be compassionate. be supportive. be attentive. listen to them. don’t derogate or steer the conversation back to your experiences. let them express whatever they need to. don’t jump to conclusions and let go of any stereotypes you may unknowingly be carrying around. it’s ok to say you don’t understand something or be learning about something you’ve never experienced - but make sure you’re doing all the above too. friends w disabilities - we celebrate you today & every day. no one gets left behind. <3
