My neighbor has been indirectly pestering me to solve the stray dog problem since her kid is afraid of dogs. I totally understand the place of concern for her child's safety this is coming from. I tried to explain her a few tips about how to keep oneself safe if you're not sure about a dog. 🐶If you don't know the dog, the dog doesn't know you enough and you're not sure how to go about without disturbing or attracting negative attention from the dog, then please consider giving as much physical space as possible while walking by a dog. It will demonstrate to the dog that you don't mean any business, definitely not a threatening one. 🐶 I have heard of incidents in which a person gets bitten because they were simply walking by a sleeping dog. My dear people! Always take care not to startle or inadvertently corner a dog. When startled or cornered, a dog is extremely likely to bite. My guess is a sleeping dog is completely unaware of any person approaching it. When all of sudden, it hears footsteps approaching as you get closer, the dog doesn't know what you are (human being or another dog) and what your intentions are. Dog might bite in defense. So for a sleeping dog, give as much space as possible while walking by the dog. 🐶 If you see a dog on a daily basis on your regular route, just say a hello while walking by. You don't have say sentences or a paragraph. I would recommend you to keep it short. Use soothing affectionate voices, no startling high pitch voices. You may even befriend them by offering biscuits/chicken nuggets. That can hasten the process of friendship. It might take several times for them to figure out that you don't mean harm, in fact you could be a source of affection/food. That way, you don't have to worry about aggressiveness of the dog you see on a daily basis. And it will provide the dog some love without costing you time or money. If you're not okay with providing food, it has been my experience that streeties are suckers for love. Just a word or two full of love. That will do.
I didn't tell her this last tip because she clearly didn't want to do anything. I mean a hello everyday for a week will not even cost you 5 mins.
