Hello 57! All dressed up and nowhere to go :-) I can’t remember the last time I dressed up so today was a good excuse. Obviously we are in the middle of a global pandemic yet I have so much to celebrate on my birthday. I’m alive! I feel fantastic. So far my loved ones are all well. One of the many things I am passionate about is helping people move better so they can age better. We also need to change the narrative around ageing. I am interested in what a body can do, not what that body looks like, despite the ageing process. Do you feel robust, are all your biological functions intact, are you able to move through your life with ease? Enquiring minds want to know. This year, as last year, to celebrate my birthday I’m walking my age in miles this week. So far two long distance walks of 15 miles with my sister and 14 with a friend today, socially distancing of course! The rest will be broken up into smaller chunks. It doesn’t hurt that the weather is absolutely amazing. I find it’s good to keep challenging myself otherwise how do we know how far we can go? There is so much we can do to change the trajectory of how we age and what ageing looks like. I plan to be swinging from trees and doing all the things that women of a certain age are not supposed to do! Who’s with me? PS. #garageworkout I put together my little garage space mostly for my personal workouts and so I have a place for my virtual clients. But I also knew, at some point, it would come in handy if bad weather came our way. We don’t get much bad weather here in Southern California, but occasionally it’s get wet and windy and last winter we were forced to cancel some sessions. Those excuses are long gone! We put the garage setup to the test today! We all love being on the beach but it was a nice change to use some different equipment and push our bodies in ways we haven’t in a while. I’m hoping the ladies are sore tomorrow 😜. Video is 2x speed. Although I may not be able to see clients right now I think my family is enjoying this time for healing. After the work that is a little uncomfortable at times I set my hubby up to reset what we have worked on.... he may have fallen sleep so I set up a good pic 🤫@yawecanventure getting some treatment for tight hips and arthritis from a shoulder injury. They suggested surgery to remove part of the collar bone but with the activities this old guy enjoys we decided to put our efforts into strengthening and mobility. He has continued to improve during this last year so naturally he just signed up for this years motocross series so now we have a goal. If you are planning to push your body it takes balance of stretching or mobility which we accomplish with yoga and Thai massage. He spent along time resisting me but if your body is tight and you push it something is going to give and it did. When your in pain you open to suggestions. If you want to prevent injury or rehab old injuries maybe it’s time to try something new. They say the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Einstein. 🥜🥥Chocolate energy bites🥥🥜 Sometimes I really fancy some chocolate (who doesn't!) and I'm always trying to find healthier versions - these energy bites really hit the spot and are loaded with minerals, anti-oxidants, healthy fats and vitamins! I was recommended this recipe by a friend of mine; I sometimes change the nuts I use, depending on what I have in the cupboard and the pistachio topping is optional. They are very nutrient dense and also quite high energy, so you only need a little bit at a time - perfect for refuelling after your run / walk or cycling. This recipe will make enough for a small / medium sized baking tray and will keep for a week or so in an airtight container. Ingredients ▪️150g pitted medjool dates ▪️1 tbsp organic raw cacao ▪️90g organic rolled oats ▪️40g organic coconut oil ▪️20g Peanuts ▪️40g Hazelnuts ▪️30g organic dessicated coconut ▪️75g 70% organic chocolate (I used Green & Blacks) ▪️25g chopped pistachios for topping (optional) Method 1. Add the dates, cacao powder, oats, coconut oil, hazelnuts, dessicated coconut & peanuts into your food processor and blitz until fine - you can add a little bit of water to help it move, but we don't want to make it into a runny paste! 2. Tip the mixture into a baking tray lined with grease proof paper and press down until its approx 2cm thick and pop into the freezer for 5-10mins to help it firm up and set 3. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of boiling water. Remove the tray from the freezer and drizzle over the liquid chocolate, sprinkle over the chopped pistachio and then put the tray in the fridge for 15-20mins. 4. ⚪Single Leg Dynamic Stability⚪ Reposted from @perfectstridept How is your balance? As we age, balance becomes important. It will vary day to day and side to side. Try these out. Also great for runners, golfers, tennis, dancers, skaters and skiers. Running, for instance, requires ~160-180 repetitions of single leg stance per minute! Training in this position builds resilience to accepting load and pushing off during the gait cycle. Incorporate these into your pre or post-workout routine to build lower chain endurance. (1) Running mans: this exercise mimics the stance phase of running and slowing the pace down helps bring more awareness to the muscle demands required. Be cognizant of your knee position and maintain a big toe press into the floor throughout the exercise. 2 x 10 per side. (2) Star pattern: goal of this exercise is to keep a stable trunk and pelvis while maintaining good foot control. Alternate moving your swing limb forward, backward, and out to the side. Stand on a pillow to make it harder at home or try it on firm ground to scale back the difficulty. Start with 30 seconds per side. Therapeutic interventions are also stressors to the nervous system. Go in easy and don’t do too much too fast too hard too soon and too long. More isn’t always better better is better. Little and often over the long haul The longer you are in pain the more sensitive you become to any stimulation. Even the good ones It’s the Goldilocks Syndrome. Not to little, not to much, but just right. That sweet spot depends on the person. How do you know what it is? Lots of ways. But one big one is watching the eyes and breathing during therapy. As cars, our bodies need regular maintenance, particularly our knees because weakness and misalignment around this joint can cause pain and permanent damage. I got knee pain for the first time when I was 18 years old, just when I stopped my full time ballet training. Then, I learned that it was super simple to avoid that pain, just knee maintenance! Looking to improve your deadlift?? Gather around for story time 🧚🏽‍♀️ . Once upon a time, there was a super strong mom that showed strength of character and intellect, but not as much in physical terms. . She worked out 4-5x/week and tried her best to eat healthy. She felt strong-ER when working out than when she was less active, but never quite felt "STRONG" like she thought she should. . All the other strong, healthy, tenacious women she followed on social media motivated her to be stronger... so she knew there was more for her to do. . She channeled and drew strength from her social media tribe, searched deep within and found the tools she needed for her journey to STRONG!! . Deadlifts seemed to really create the momentum needed to help her get to her goals. . She soon realized, the secret to a really strong deadlift is good form. The secret to good form is strong, active muscles. The secret to muscle activation is in the warm up. . To deadlift heavy u gotta warm tf out those glutes and the hip hinge movement pattern. . Here's how I got to a new record-- :DB RDL - Low weight/high reps :Lateral Box Step - high steps with acute hip angle for more glute and ham fire :KB Sumo DL - hinge at waist, squeeze glutes/press heels thru floor as u stand back upright :Sumo DL 3 sets @ 135 x 8 ; 185 x 4 . Not pictured -- 5 x 12 RDL bar only . The whole point of this post is, if u want to do it right, u better warm it up!! ...thassit! . How are my deadlifts looking? A couple years ago I spent an afternoon kneeling on my mom’s wooden floor helping her go through cabinets of albums and pictures. I noticed my knee was hurting a little - but it wasn't any reason to stop what I was doing. Well I was wrong The next day I had such a burning in the front of my knee I could barely tolerate to bend it. I couldn’t walk up and down the stairs. I couldn’t use that leg to stand up from my couch. And you know what, I had no bruise, no swelling - but don’t dare touch the spot! It was really sore when touched and when my knee bent. I had irritated my patellar tendon (knee cap tendon) and the tissues were not happy when I stretched them. I love music. I've had a crush on music my whole life. So many songs bring these incredible memories and I'm grateful for this powerful creation that never stop being made. I believe that most songs, most music, most artists have something so much higher than this (Earth) place coming through them. This inspiration has purpose and it's to awaken you to more beauty and possibilities. To get you moving and flowing in directions you didn't think to take. ⁠ ⁠ In my adulthood, it seems almost impossible not to at least move to a good song when it's playing anywhere. I don't really understand why other people aren't dancing in the store with me, in line at in an event, or anywhere else in public. ??? Don't you feel it? Don't you want to just move? My goodness we are trained well to hold that in. ⁠ ⁠ One of my many passions is to get women to move. To practice falling in love with easy moves to great music. It changes something in them. Permission to move freely in a safe environment starts to retrain the mind and the body to respond differently to life. It's the most beautiful thing. ⁠ ⁠ How can you listen differently today? 💫Monday Movement💫 Wall Sit 🪑 Tones & Strengthens Just like with any exercise, adequately engaging the correct muscle groups help build and strengthens muscles Improves Posture During the Wall Sit, you concentrate on keeping your entire back on the wall while opening your chest and bringing your shoulders back. This is a good example of maintaining exceptional posture. This is a good example of maintaining exceptional posture. Improves Focus As you can imagine, continually holding a perfect position while your legs are burning is not an easy task. Concentration on maintaining perfect technique and breath is important. So, it is a mental challenge as much as a physical one! Improves Balance & Stability As you only have the wall to stabilise you, you must rely on your core and leg strength to hold your position. An extra element of balance comes into play when you advance your Wall Sit with dynamic leg movements. Core engagement is also a big part of this exercise as you work your abs when holding the position. A strong core equals better stability and balance on the pitch and in day-to-day life. Improves Core Strength You might be thinking that working your core in the Wall Sit exercise is impossible. But let me tell you, if you are doing the exercise correctly, you will be feeling it in your abs as well! By tightening your abs, you are improving your posture and body support during the exercise. Anyone & Anywhere no matter where you are (gym, outdoors, office, hotel room etc) you can ALWAYS incorporate the Wall Sit. Anyone of any age, fitness level and previous training knowledge can do this as well. You just need to find a wall and understand the correct technique. No Equipment Needed Another huge benefit of the Wall Sit is that you don’t need a gym membership, access to equipment or a personal trainer to do this.
