Dear Live Music,
Hello, Old Friend! It is me, Kerry. Gosh, I have missed you!
I was having a reflective day on Sunday, so I looked back at some memories, and there you were, so prominent in many of them!
Do you remember when we were first introduced? It is so easy for me to recall the date, as it was at the Van Halen 1984 concert. I was in grade 10 and arrived at the Pacific National Exhibition center, giddy beyond belief, with my McDonalds extra large coke cup filled to the brim with Lonesome Charlie. You were the star of the show, with David Lee Roth flying around the venue and Eddie strumming his guitar. I fell in love with you right away.
The next few years were spent enjoying my early days of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, ahhhh the list goes on and on. It was the 80’s—you were so incredibly popular, and you always gave it your all. You were colourful, loud... the life of the party.
As I grew older, so did you. You slowed down a bit as I enjoyed you in more mellow settings… maybe on a beach, or at a school concert. But you always showed up and presented your very best face. You never disappointed.
In more recent years, I went back to seeing you at outdoor concerts. You didn’t care if it was rain or shine, you insisted on performing and ensuring everyone was happy. Two recent visits give me the most joyful memories. One would be when I saw you at Bluesfest in Thunder Bay 2019... when you were showcasing Bryan Adams—I sang every word and knew every note... you gave generously and helped so many of us relive our youth that night. The other experience was when you were with Choir! Choir! Choir! and you facilitated a field full of people – all ages, races and genders, in a full out sing along of Hallelujah. It was the most beautiful display of camaraderie I had ever experienced, and you were there, orchestrating it.
I missed you this summer, and I cannot WAIT for you to return. You have been good to me, Live Music, and I want you to know that out of sight is NOT out of mind.
So much Love for you,
