You know that meme going around about the dog who won’t come down from the counter and it says, ‘I will not come down. We’ve already been on 20 walks today!’ That’s Rocky 110% lately. When I start getting bored, I just walk the dogs, sometimes forgetting Rocky is almost 12 and surely doesn’t require, need or benefit from 3-4 hours of walking per day.
Yesterday, I overdid it for sure. Rocky was pretty restless in the evening and through the night. Opposite of what you’d think, right? I thought he’d be so tired, he wouldn’t move, but I think his legs and joints were super achy, making him pretty uncomfortable.
Today, he grounded on our walk quite a few times (and has done so lately). He knows the route to get back to the car, so he’d ground and then when I’d take a step towards him, he’d dart in the direction to take us back.
Down days are now something I contemplate for him and that’s never been a thought before.
But I hesitate to do it.
I think it’s because if I allow him to miss a day,
allow him to exercise less,
then I’m openly admitting that he’s slowing down.
And if I admit it,
then it becomes our truth,
But deep down,
I know. I really do.
Saying it aloud is just...
But for Rocky’s benefit, health and well-being,
I’m surely going to make some changes to our routine 🧡
