Let’s kick off the week with a guest post by my pal Jacob Berendes. Jakes is one of my closest friends and do yourself a favor and go to his website FUJICHIA.COM. Always funny, always smart. Here he is with a 1980 Smurfs button-
I'm too busy to think" is a feeling that many of us have had, in a frenzy, when there's so much to do that you're running on automatic. But the picture we're presented with on this button doesn't match this feeling at all, in fact it's the exact opposite-- a Smurf sitting under a tree, a look of unhurried peace blossoming on his face. What gives? It's Zen-- the Smurf is meditating. If you never tried meditation before, you might be surprised to think of it as a strenuous, busy activity, but it really is. Like physical exercise it's a difficult practice that produces a feeling of relaxation but isn't, itself, relaxing. Your goal is to temporarily quiet the interior monologue, the part of you that you think does all the thinking. This is really hard to do! When you meditate you regularly fail, start to feel bad for failing, absolve yourself of guilt for failing, and try again. There are many styles- some people just aim for the void, some people concentrate on their breath, some recite a mantra, some just listen to whatever sounds are happening, without judgement. There are religious styles and irreligious styles. If you were meditating and someone interrupted to ask what you were thinking about, "I'm too busy to think" really is the best answer possible. Probably the creators of this pin didn't intend this interpretation, they just lazily pasted a funny phrase on a licensed property. But as sometimes happens with pure accidental nonsense and stone-cold garbaggio, there is an out-of-mind truth that we might never get to rationally. If you want to get started meditating: 1- look up some videos, 2- think of it as mental push ups or "just something I'm doing", and 3- commit to 20 minutes a day for 2 weeks. As with any exercise, you don't start seeing gains for a while. Shoutout to the Smurfs for this one!
