Good Friday brings with it many good memories, but none are better than this.
This is Zugena pug, on his first day with us, Good Friday, too many years back, getting introduced to the good life, and walking into the Hotel Splendid, Munich.
Zugena was a circus dog. 😑 We'd happened on him when the troupe of which he was a part was "sublet" from German Circus Flic Flac to Swiss Circus Knie, and Knie were performing in August in Geneva as the did every year. I couldn't believe a pug, in a circus act. Every day we'd visit, and sneak some chicken or Maccas through the wire enclosure to him & his mates.
After 2 weeks, the circus moved on, and so for the rest of the summer, we'd go, late afternoon, or weekend if too far away, to try to get our hands through the wire to give a pat and some treats. Then autumn arrived, we "farewelled" Zugena in Ticino, and the dogs returned to Arne.
For months after, I'd call to see where the circus was performing, and try to visit when possible. We'd never picked up Zugena, cuddled, just communicated through a fence. It was heartbreaking on one visit to realize he'd lost an eye. 😪 Pre-internet and mobile phones, I wrote and said if the troupe was ever disbanded, we'd love to give Zugena a home.
And so, after 2 years, it came to pass. I'd rung to see where the circus was at Easter, and was told, Munich, and if you want the dog, you can have him.
So Zugena learnt about love, comfort, all the good things a pug, and all dogs, should know.
Bringing him eventually to Australia was another long story, but he rests with us now, in Port Douglas. My special boy. ❤
