Fizzy Ice Sea Creature Rescue. We managed to fit one last ice rescue into 2020! Excavating toys from ice has definitely been a favorite for us this year. I froze a few plastic sea creatures in baking soda paste months ago and with no school this week, we had plenty of time to โ€œrescueโ€ them. I gave the kids cups of vinegar mixed with a little dish soap and pipettes to melt the ice, but their favorite thing to do was submerge the baking-soda ice chunk into their vinegar and watch the bubbles overflow!

A throwback to when I brought my nephew to lab with me for โ€œTake Your Child to Work Dayโ€. We played with liquid nitrogen and soap. Needless to say, he loved it! ๐Ÿงผ ๐ŸŒ‹

Have you and your kids played with baking soda and vinegar yet? ๐ŸŒ‹ When mixed, baking soda and vinegar react to make water, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, and sodium acetate (soluble in water). In this video I mixed a small amount of baking soda from the lid on my container into a small amount of vinegar. I used a small container for salad dressing- the top pops off like a film canister. The reaction occurs very quickly and the CO2 gas creates enough pressure to pop the lid off. It definitely creates the dramatic excitement and mess that every little one needs.
