(2007, dir Sam Raimi)
Spiderman meets an alien and goes all emo. I wasn’t sure if I was going to watch this again after rewatching the first two Spider-man movies as I did not enjoy this when it came out, but decided to give this another shot. While the jazz club scene is as bad as I remembered it being I was surprised by how ok the rest of this movie was. All of the returning characters are great with JK Simmons again being the highlight, and I liked the addition of Topher Grace. The CGI is again really well done (especially for the time) with Sandman effects being some of the best. The movie suffers from having too many villains, James Franco had been built up for two movies already so he had to be here but one of Sandman and Venom should have been cut. While I know Venom was the one forced into the movie and is responsible for the awful jazz club scene that’s the villain I’d keep as Eddie Brock makes for a good foil to Peter Parker and Sandman didn’t have that same connection (you can’t just retcon the first movie to make him relevant). There’s still a lot of good here and the worst parts don’t take up that much of the runtime, so while this is a clear step back from the previous two movies it’s not as bad as it’s reputation would indicate. Would love to see Raimi’s actual vision for this one 6/10.
