Another one I picked away at a few weeks ago. Saiyan Saga.
Every now and then, as an exercise I try to do a Drew Struzan-esque composition. Not necessarily copy one of his compositions, but try to figure out the thinking that makes his vignette posters so successful.
I don’t think I nailed it here, and missed the mark on some elements for sure. My early sketches had Frieza as that looming, over-arching figure overshadowing the rest - but I felt like seeing his battle pod so he goes up front. Also, I wanted to draw Bardock. I wanted to have Bardock and Frieza as the two (yet unknown) bookends of the entire saga. They should have been in the background. I also knew I wanted to make Vegeta the centerpiece for whatever reason and all the sketches reflect that.
In the end, I don’t think it’s a cohesive representation of the storyline(s) or the idea I was representing but..what the hell.
What’s your favorite part of this? What could I have done differently? If you have an opinion, lemme know!
