Happy #worldwildlifeday ! 💚
(Long post ahead hahahuhu)
I’ve been into sustainability for years now- from saying hard pass no to plastics as much as I can, to trying my best in making sustainable choices, but having plants made me see it in another perspective. It made me realize how connected we are and everything that we do. How our actions can stir someone else’s opinions, and how we should keep on learning to preserve what we can when we still have time.
This juvenile Alocasia zebrina is part of my birthday giveaway @hardaneph . I got this baby from my good friend @paowwiiee 's ( @blesseed.ph ) momma Zeb! Yayy!!
I chose to share this plant because aside from loving Alocasias, this has become a point of discussion (along with others) last year when the plantdemic has reached its peak. Alocasia zebrina is considered as a vulnerable species, endemic only to the Philippines. Due to the influx of people getting into plant care whether it’s common and uncommon kind of plant (I don’t wanna use rare because I believe that there aren’t rare ones, just not enough cultivation of its variety ), news about deforestation, illegal trade, and poaching also skyrocketed just to meet the demand. If you own uncommon plants, or these vulnerable and endangered species— please propagate them, share them with others or sell them in a reasonable price.
I actually don’t know how to start this conversation and I was really scared as I was typing this lol because I’m no expert regarding the matter, I just know that I’m deeply wounded with what’s happening and I need to speak up about it. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against new plant parents who are into this hobby because Ive been there and I know the feeling – I just hope that before purchasing a plant, you know how it was acquired so you’ll be sure that you wont be buying illegally-traded ones. Do a thorough research because after all, youre still getting a living thing.
I also hope that you give much time to yourself as you are giving to your plants and pets because you too deserve all the love and care. 🤍
