8 years ago in our genealogy trip to Kentucky and Virginia, we went to Appomattox Courthouse and then here to the final resting place of Patrick Henry. We'd gone to Floyd County Kentucky for Papa, we stopped by the Corn Creek Baptist Church for Grandma, but the American history stuff was mostly for me. They were really bored as I wandered around here πŸ˜… but they knew how important it was to me. That's the type of family I grew up in. (Also much like Jefferson, Henry was, I later learned a brilliant speaker and bringer of legal change but a garbage human otherwise. He locked his mentally ill wife in a cellar for years, and once she died, married a much younger woman and had a gazillion more kids).

So this whole waiting to see family because of a deadly virus thing isn't new to us. 17 years ago this week, it was finally safe enough for my uncle and aunt to fly to China after the SARS outbreak and come home with my cousin. They'd waited nearly a year to do so, missing her first birthday, and I'll spare you the other details of why this was a problem. Now she's off to her first year of college. I guess when I get sad about not being able to see my family because of a different SARS virus, I need to remind myself that this isn't the first time I've done it...

Excited to try out the new formula! I've been using the original every night for over a year. Happy that I was sent this little sample bottle to try and compare to their old formula; my only gripe so far is that the lid doesn't have a dropper for application like my travel bottle for the original does, so we'll see how I feel about that part (but the full size bottle does, so that isn't a major thing) #GenerationANR #contest #complimentary @esteelauder @Influenster

To use the insane amount of cabbage we had, I made golabki (Polish version of the German galuskies Kansas people make). I prefer golabki because of the tomato sauce. There's two trays, so we'll be eating these a while... It was good, so here's the recipe. I also highly recommend the freezer method for the cabbage if you're making the meat mixture ahead of time anyway. https://www.food.com/recipe/golabki-polish-cabbage-rolls-297235?photo=cGhvdG8tNDIyMjkz

I bought myself a dozen roses yesterday since they were $6 at the grocery store. I also got $60 in groceries, minus the roses, a loaf of bread, and a cup of yogurt, into my backpack and made the just over half a mile trek back up the hill to our place. I was drenched in sweat and my back and shoulders are sore today, but it was nice to have a shopping trip that reminded my of my days in Japan where I could only buy as much as I could carry back to my apartment.

That, my friends, is some homemade ramen. Yes I used packaged noodles and the eggs didn't work the way I'd hoped because I'm bad at planning ahead, but the pork and broth were pretty good

Almost correct hokkien char mee. I followed the recipe but it made way too much sauce. Now I know better for next time.

Devon surprised me with this. Super fun, and it does get my heart rate up right away! I will definitely do it more in the future.

After spending so many years in Japan, Japanese food in the US is often a letdown. There's a Japanese place next to the Target closest to our new place, so I thought it'd be a nice treat after all the cooking I've been doing. I was excited by the reviews and the Japanese spoken in the kitchen when we went to get this, but it was just ok. Eggs were great, decent broth, but I didn't like their noodles. The ebi mayo made me happier, though. Looks like I need to get some pork belly and make my own as well as some hokkien char mee this next week (the closest Indonesian, Malaysian, or Singaporean food places are in LA, and I'm not going anywhere near there while they're a major Covid-19 hotspot. I miss being able to go to Malaysia Cafe in Wichita and get hokkien char mee or mee goreng or char kway teow...).

I haven't stayed on top of food pics even though I've been cooking a lot lately. Tonight I reheated a rotisserie chicken in the air fryer (they were 2 for $10 at our Kroger this week, so this is our second one!). Then I roasted red potatoes and made maple bacon brussels sprouts since the potatoes and sprouts cooked at the same temp. I've been known to plan meals around details like that! Tiny plate because I need to run the dish washer tonight 😬
